ArtPlace Mississippi is headquartered in Greenwood, Mississippi. Their mission is to transform people and communities through art. ArtPlace uses pioneering hands-on programming for all ages & backgrounds regardless of cultural, educational, racial, or socioeconomic status. Their vision is to connect people, grow lives and build communities. They strive to empower people with the confidence, skills and connections needed to accomplish their goals and contribute to the revitalization of their communities.
Beacon Harbor
Beacon Harbor is a facility with a unique concept of providing homes for developmentally disabled adults in this low income region of the nation. Beacon Harbor has a total of 3 homes – 1 male residence and 2 female residences. Beacon Harbor is not an institution. It is a safe haven with a warm, friendly home like environment and does not charge a fee.
Boy Scouts is a nationally known educational movement working as partners with local churches, schools, and civic organizations to provide character-building activities, citizenship training and physical fitness through Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Explorers.
In one year, Boy Scouts provided over 26,000 hours of community service within the Chickasaw Council. They also collected 32,000 pounds of food during the Scouting for Food Campaign. All food went to local community food pantries and shelters. Scouting has over 800 acres of program facilities where we provide adventure for Scouts and non-Scouts alike in the Chickasaw Council.
Community Food Pantry
The Community Food Pantry is a locally supported, Federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program approved agency providing food to those who, by referral, are in need and receive little or no assistance. Open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1:00-3:00 pm. Emergency assistance available daily.
Volunteers give of their time and energy with no pay, 296 hours per month. The Food Pantry serves an average of 650 families each month, requiring approximately 25,875 pounds of food. Most businesses, churches, clubs, and organizations in Greenwood support the Community Food Pantry. They are doing like the bible tells us to do, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” The giver receives the blessing, just like the volunteers and the receiver.
In 2008 Habitat for Humanity began focusing on larger chapters and communities and forcing smaller chapters to incorporate rules and regulations that the smaller chapters could not obligate too. In 2008 Millard and Linda Fuller left Habitat for Humanity and formed Fuller Center for Housing so smaller communities and organizations could continue the mission work as they intended.
Since the organizational name change, Fuller center has built 6 houses and moved 13 Katrina Cottages into Baptist Town. In 2015 the Fuller Center conducted 28 energy upgrades to disadvantaged households with an additional 10 energy upgrades in 2016 plus 2 greater blessing boxes for minor repairs to elderly homeowners.
GIM Community Kitchen
The Greenwood Interfaith Ministries is comprised of 15 local churches of all denominations and ethnicity. The Community Kitchen is a Christian ministry dedicated to serving hot lunch-time meals to anyone in need without any requirements.
The Community Kitchen opened on December 23, 2003 at its present location on the corner of Walthall and Johnson. The Community Kitchen serves, on average, 175 meals per day.
Girl Scouts Heart of the South
Girl Scouts provides leadership development through hands-on skill building activities that help K-12 girls explore new interests, cultivate positive values, develop a stronger social conscience, build higher self-esteem, access life changing adventures, and gain critical life skills.
Leflore County 4H Clubs
4-H is designed for youth between the ages of 8 and 18. Through selected projects a 4-H’er “learns by doing” with other 4-H’ers, volunteers, and specialists from Leflore County and Mississippi State University.
4-H Teaches:
- Belonging – Develop positive relationships with caring adults;
- Generosity – Providing and appreciating service to others;
- Independence – Presenting frequent opportunities for self-discipline through community service;
- Mastery – Enhancing participation in engaged learning to grow new skills.
The Leflore County Humane Society is a privately held shelter governed by a board of directors. We turn no animal away. The Humane Society provides food, water, shelter and vet care and all our animals are spayed and neutered before adoption. The goal is to find the perfect forever home for every animal that enters our doors.
Salvation Army gives aid to local families and stranded transients in need of emergency help, comfort, or spiritual guidance. It provides emergency disaster services, character-building activities, welfare services, family counseling and regular church services. Our local Salvation Army offers nine different programs including Junior Soldiers and Corps Cadets, Women’s Ministries, Mens Fellowship, Music Classes and so much more.
The Salvation Army also has its own church at 209 Stone Street where it provides after school programs in a fun and safe environment, helping to improve the literacy of our children.
